In the 1862 Bartender's Guide by Jerry Thomas, he lists seven different Cobbler recipes, six of them are made with wines, only one, the Whiskey Cobbler is made with a spirit. Here is how he listed that recipe:

104. Whiskey Cobbler.
(Use large bar glass)

2 wine-glasses of whiskey.
1 tablespoon of sugar.
2 or 3 slices of orange.
Fill tumbler with ice, and shake well. Imbibe through a straw
